You heard me right. The running of the Chihuahuas is a thing and, despite the size of the tiny dogs, it’s big! No, it’s not some crazy dream I had one night after drinking one too many Coronas. It’s not a party in my backyard where everyone gets tipsy and lets their Chihuahuas run around freely. It’s a legitimate contest and the dogs and the contestants take it pretty seriously.
The Running of the Chihuahuas happens every year in New Mexico, Tennessee, Florida and even Washington D.C. How this hasn’t gone mainstream yet, I do not know. I would’ve purchased/rented/borrowed a Chihuahua just to compete in it. Wouldn’t you pay much more money to see this than the running of the bulls? It’s cuter, cuddlier and it doesn’t involve running away from anything with sharp horns.
Basically, the Running of the Chihuahuas is a party all about dogs. Most of the events feature food trucks, beer, dog contests, and of course Chihuahua racing! Guess what else? These events are for a good cause! Most of the money raised goes to animal charities. Can it get any better?
