Alright, so you’ve got your doggo and you’re looking to expand the pet family just a bit more. But now you have to answer the question of what kind of pet you should get! For some pet owners, it can be difficult to get a new pet because your dog might be possessive of you or you might have concerns that your dog won’t get along with your new pet. Don’t worry, we at Digital Doggy did some digging and have found the best pets to get after you adopt a doggo!

First of all, you will want to make sure that your new housemate and your pup can live safely and peacefully together. Now the safest bet, really, is just to get another dog! Dogs typically get along with each other (I mean, have you been to the dog park?) and can keep each other company when you go out for the day. However for some pet owners, getting another dog is not feasible. It might be for financial reasons, lack of space, or time. Whatever the case, you do have other options!
Some of the popular pets you should consider adding to your family are:
- Guinea pigs
The animals mentioned above, with the exception of cats, are mostly kept in cages, which is a plus if you’re limited with space. In addition, if your dog is particularly curious and you’re nervous about your dog getting too excited about your other pet, then the cage also acts as protection while your pup gets used to having a new friend around the house. Rabbits, hamsters, ferrets, birds, reptiles, and guinea pigs are also smaller than dogs, and easy to take care of, usually only requiring that you feed and clean their cages regularly.
I know that we put cat right at the top of that list, and you’ve probably heard that cats and dogs don’t get along. But in actuality, they can be the best of friends! Cats are typically more mild-mannered and calm, whereas dogs are high-energy creatures, which is why most people think that they can’t go together. But the long running myth is being debunked. If both pets are respectful of each other and their space, they can end up having great friendships!
If you’re looking for a reaaally low maintenance second pet, then you should consider getting a fish! You just have to feed and clean the fish tank, and you get to enjoy the benefits of having a second pet without too many extra responsibilities! Just make sure that you keep the tank covered at all times, especially if you have a cat or an excited puppy around.
