We all know that dogs are man’s (or woman’s!) best friend. Our loveable pups are there for us right when we get home from a long day at work with a wagging tail, and they’re sure to brighten up any bad day. Dogs seemingly get along with everyone, both adults and kids alike. It’s no secret that doggos are one of the most friendly creatures out there, but there’s one dog whose friendship took an even more unique turn, proving that dogs really are the friendliest animals out there.
Our story starts with Cricket. Cricket isn’t a tiny bug as the name suggests, but rather a gorgeous golden retriever that lives happily with Christine Hill in their home in Palos Verdes, California. Cricket’s kind brown eyes and cheerful demeanor make this pup an instant win. But what makes Cricket special is that this dog’s best friend isn’t a human, but actually a tortoise named Larry.
You heard us right. A tortoise.
When Christine Hill went to an animal education center with her children, she didn’t think she’d be leaving with another pet. But the family saw Larry being bullied in his enclosure by other tortoises who were fighting for a female’s attention. The poor tortoise was terrified. Hill alerted the center staff who eventually allowed her to bring Larry home with her. This isn’t the first rescue mission she’s successfully run. She has about 30 animals in her house, including eels and lobsters that she’s rescued from seafood restaurants.
When the Hill family returned home with Larry, he was constantly trying to escape, still shaken and scared from his experience. But something totally magical happened when Cricket entered the picture.
“I know this sounds silly, but it was almost like they were chatting,” Hill says about Cricket and Larry’s first encounter. When Cricket first saw Larry the tortoise, the dog plopped right down next to Larry, which calmed him down and put him at ease for the first time since he arrived at the Hill household.
Hill says, “Since that day, they’ve been inseparable.”
The two unlikely friends do everything together. They eat right next to each other, sleep in the same room side by side, and even go on walks together! When Larry went into hibernation last year, he buried himself underneath Cricket’s dog bed. Talk about BFFs for life!
He’s a funny little guy—he has so much character,” Hill says. “He will come wobbling down the hallway to greet us with Cricket when we get home.” We can totally picture it: a huge African spurred tortoise waddling down the hallway accompanied by a big, goofy golden retriever. Sounds like the best way to be welcomed home!
