By now you’ve probably heard of what’s happening over in Houston, Texas. Hurricane Harvey has been making it’s way through Texas, leaving high flood waters and displacing thousands of residents. But the disaster is also full of stories of hope, including nursing home residents being rescued and a mattress store owner opening up his store as a makeshift shelter. We at Digital Doggy found one of the most heart-warming stories and we couldn’t wait to share it with you!
Our story is about Otis, a beautiful German Shepard mix with kind eyes, black and caramel colored fur, and floppy ears. Otis has been a happy resident in Houston for six years, becoming a local favorite at the Dairy Queen (usually scoring some free treats!). He’s pretty well known by his neighbors. Last Friday, when the storm hit his house, Otis became frightened and bolted out the back door, barreling through the screen door that was keeping him on the porch. He was being looked after by Salvador Segovia, who was taking care of him for his grandson, who had evacuated earlier. When he noticed Otis was gone, Segovia called for the doggo the next morning, but he was nowhere to be found. He circled the block looking for Otis, but the pup didn’t show up, despite his best efforts. Segovia was starting to worry.
In a different part of town on Saturday morning, Tiele Dockens was out checking on some of her neighbours’ houses when she saw Otis on the street. But what’s most shocking is that Otis was carrying a huge bag of dog food in his mouth. Dockens quickly snapped a photo and shared it to Facebook, where it quickly went viral.
Since Dockens wasn’t familiar with Otis, she followed him to make sure that he was safe and not just a stray dog on the street. She ended up at the Segovia house, where Otis was reunited with Salvador Segovia. In an article from the Washington Post, Segovia said “This lady comes by and tells me, ‘Is that your dog coming down the road?’ And I turn around, there comes Otis, and he’s carrying food!” Otis walked right up to the front porch, dropped off the bag of dog food, and laid on the porch, happy as a pup could be. How adorable!
Otis likes to take off alone, often stopping by a nearby lumber supply and building store, where the owner always gives him treats. He’s definitely a smart dog who knows where to pick up food. Since Otis was alone for the night, the hungry dog knew exactly where to get delicious food for himself, and somehow got inside and grabbed himself som Ol’ Roy Dog Food.
This intelligent pup totally melts our hearts.
