We at Digital Doggy are sooo excited for this weekend because it’s one of our favorite holidays! Have you guessed it yet?
Alright, we’ll spill! It’s National Dog day this weekend, on August 26th. Yup, you heard us right. National Dog Day!
Before you break out the confetti cannons to celebrate (yes, we’re that excited), we wanted to tell you a bit about the holiday itself. National Dog Day was established in 2004, and has been celebrated for 13 years. Colleen Paige (who also founded National Puppy Day, National Cat Day, and National Mutt Day) is the founder of this day, and it marks the day that she adopted her first wonderful rescue dog, Sheltie (what an adorable name!), when she was 10 years old.
National Dog Day is meant to bring awareness to all breeds of dogs. But it’s especially for dogs that are in shelters. The day is meant to recognize all that dogs do for us– besides welcoming us home at the end of a long day, they’ve helped save human lives, and provide emotional support for countless people across the globe.
Now that you know what National Dog Day is all about, how should you celebrate this wonderful holiday? Well, we at Digital Doggy have got you covered. Read on to find out the best ways to enjoy National Dog Day!
- Adopt a Dog
What better day to adopt your new four-legged best friend than National Dog Day? Ask your local shelter to see if they have any adoption specials, as most will have a reduced adoption and registration fee for the holiday. And this could be the day that you add a super special pup to your family. Plus you’ll be a hero for helping a pup find their forever home.
- Volunteer at a Dog Shelter
If adoption isn’t something that you can do right now, no worries! There are still ways to help while getting to hang out with dogs all day. And that’s by volunteering! Ask your local shelter if they need any help, and give them the gift of your time. You can help clean up kennels, take dogs out for walks, and even help feed puppies. Spending a day volunteering is so rewarding and really helps out the staff at shelters. You’ll leave feeling great– plus you don’t have to wait until National Dog Day next year to do it again, you can return anytime you have a second to spare!
- Throw a National Dog Day Party
Yaaas! It’s time to break out your best party shoes and throw a party! Invite all of your favorite dogs and celebrate with doggy friendly beer or a Char-DOG-nay (which is totally real! Check it out!)
You can bake a dog friendly cake, and have everyone bring in old toys, blankets, and dog-related items they no longer use so you can donate them to your local shelter. Set up a cute little photobooth for your pups to get awesome insta-worthy content (and if you don’t want to make your own backdrop, you can grab this awesome 2-pack from amazon.
