It’s always hard leaving your pups at home – the big eyes, the whining…we cannot think of anything worse. So when you do have the chance to take your dog with you, it’s always a great feeling and total sigh of relief. To top things off, it’s even better if you’re going green and taking the metro. But things are starting to change, especially in New York. There are new rules and regulations that are making it harder to bring dogs along for the ride.
The new rule in New York City now prevents dogs from riding the metro, unless they can fit inside of a bag. The rule’ s prime objective is to rid the subway systems of big dogs, which would make more room for human public transit riders. The New York subways are best known for being completely over crowded so this is a measure that the Metro is taking in order to make subway users’ commutes a little easier and more comfortable.
Creating more space is not the only reason for the new regulation. There have been instances in the past few years of animals getting stuck in precarious places and delaying subways. Just last November, a Rottweiler puppy broke free of its leash had to be rescued from the tracks by a subway worker. Dogs are not the only pets causing these kinds of problems. Two kittens got stuck on the tracks in 2013 and another cat in a similar situation at the Canal Street caused dozens of delayed trains.
But for those that are unable to leave their pets at home, they’ve come up with a super creative way to bring their dogs with them on the subway. If your dog doesn’t fit the bag, make the bag fit the dog instead. The new regulation does not specify the size of the bag and people are taking full advantage of that. What type of bag, you may ask? The sky’s the limit here.
New York citizens are becoming increasingly innovative. Some choose to put their dog in a backpack. Others choose to put them in huge purses. And some even choose to put their pups in those giant blue IKEA bags. Whatever the bag, these pups and their owners are definitely travelling in style.
It’s hilarious to see a dog travelling in a bag on the subway, but dogs in bags are so hot right now. Check out these doggone giggle-worthy photos.
Canvas totes aren’t just for books and groceries anymore, but for carrying happy beagles!
This one’s definitely a champion! (the big dog in the champion bag)

Some even went with a more rugged approach, going all out with a backpack!
There is something just so great and oddly satisfying about seeing a huge dog being treated as a lap puppy. The jury is still not out on whether the rule will be amended, but for now, we are loving all of these dogs in bags!
