Our dogs are smarter than they look. Well, I take that back. I’ve met a lot of really smart looking dogs. The bottom line is, dogs are actually very bright, social, communicative animals and they use their dog barks to communicate efficiently. All this time I thought dogs barked to annoy humans. I’m sure that’s true in some cases but their bark means so much more! A specific dog bark may be difficult to identify because, let’s be honest, like kind of all sound exactly alike. Have you ever wondered what your dog was trying to tell you? Well, now you’ll know.
Types of dog bark: Rapid barks consistently. Possibly 3-4 barks in a row
Meaning: Alerting the room! Calling out to other dogs or other humans there is something going on and it doesn’t look good. (probably a mailman, honestly)
Type of dog bark: Very quick and very repetitive barking
Meaning: This is a threat! This is not a drill! There is something seriously wrong and we need to get help!
Type of dog bark: Repetitive barking continued but this time in a lower pitch
Meaning: I am serious! This is not funny! There is something happening that they’re not telling us! Seek help! Find humans! Stranger danger! Oh, it’s a squirrel.
Type of dog bark: Long solid dog barking with pauses in between.
Meaning: Lonely! I am so lonely! I have nobody to call my own! Howwwwwwwl.
Type of dog bark: 1-2 sharp short dog barks (sometimes high pitched or mid range)
Meaning: Hello, it’s me. I’m in California dreamin’ about who we used to be. (your dog might be an Adele fan) This kind of barking usually happens in response to an arrival or sight of a familiar person.
Type of dog bark: One single, sharp short bark
Meaning: You talking to me?! Are you talking to me?! This kind of dog bark is an indication your dog wants you or another dog to stop. Just stop whatever you’re doing and leave the dog alone.
Type of dog bark: Single, sharp high pitched bark
Meaning: Whoa! Why you sneakin’ up on me like that? You scared me, man.
Type of dog bark: Single bark but more eager
Meaning: Come here! I see you! Come here! Your dog probably learned this behavior from you or another human. So….you’re welcome.
Type of dog bark: Stutter type of bark
Meaning: Want to play? This type of bark is usually done while in a downward dog position. I’m not talking about the yoga pose either.
Type of dog bark: Rising bark
Meaning: I like you! I’m having fun! Now throw the ball.
Type of dog bark: Softer, lower pitched bark
Meaning: Get. The. Hell. Away. From. Me. This is a warning sign and not a good one. Stay away!
Type of dog bark: Growl bark, lower pitched
Meaning: I warned you with that last bark. Now I am really warning you! Back off or we’ll fight!
Type of dog bark: Soft whimpering
Meaning: Help me. I am hurt or I am really, REALLY scared.
