Yay! You got a dog and it’s a big deal! You’ll be taking care of a furry, slobbery baby for a long ass time. Get ready and brace yourself, this aint easy. Here are some simple tips for your new pup that you need to know now:
- Basic Commands
Sit, come, stay and no: these are the magical commands you should get to know, now. Your dog will be hearing these forever and you’ll be saying them forever.
- Potty Training
Who wants a dog using the bathroom in their house on the floor? Unless you somehow taught them how to use the toilet like a human (I hope not), get used to letting your dog outside all the time. Every time your dog uses the bathroom outside, make sure the reward them with happy gestures and treats.
- Crate/Bed Training
Dogs have a natural tendency to den. They like a secure spot in the house that they know is theirs. Make sure to make up a comfy crate or bed and reward them for using it.
- Learning to be okay alone
Dogs with separation anxiety suffer a tremendous amount. Your dog needs to trust you’ll return. In order to achieve this is to stagger the amount of time you’re gone and reinforce good behavior with treats and love. Start with leaving them alone for 5 minutes then gradually increase the amount of time you’re gone. This will do they trick and over time your dog will feel at ease alone.
