Our dogs are the most important animals in our lives. They’re often more important than the people in our lives. How can you show the world your dog means everything to you? Well, put down your camera and pick up the paintbrush because your dog is getting a portrait.

Here’s what you’ll need.
- Buy a canvas
I would recommend something small to start. The better you get, the bigger than canvas can be. A 10 x 10 inch canvas should be the perfect size.
- Buy acrylic paint
Don’t feel the need to get anything fancy. Just stick to a small pack of primary colored acrylic paint. Remember, your collection can always grow later down the road.
- Find a good picture of your dog to copy
It will be much easier to use a photograph than your memory. Find a clear picture of your dog that would be fun to draw and put it right next to your canvas.
- Start drawing with a pencil
The great thing about a pencil is you can erase it. Paint will stay forever.
- Give your dog a beautiful background
I used a baby blue background on my first dog portrait. It turned out blueeetiful!
- Trace the pencil marks with your paint
You’re getting closer to a finished product! Don’t forget to use water with your acrylic paint. It helps with blending.
- Try watching a Youtube video for tips on drawing the eyes and the mouth
These two areas will be the most difficult to draw. You’ll need the extra help.
- Don’t give up!
You’ll learn from your errors and eventually be the next Picasso for pooches! If your painting ends up looking like one big hairy blob, don’t worry. It ain’t easy capturing the absolute beauty of our dogs…..but it’s fun trying.
