So you just got an adorable puppy and everyone you see flips out about it. Life is good. Right? Wrong. Let’s be real – your home is probably covered in dog poop and stinks like pee every time you walk through the front door. No scented candle is going to help this mess out. Here are some ways to fix your pup-pee problem!

- Puppy pads all the way, bro!
You can buy these disposable pads at just about any pet supply store near you. They are relatively inexpensive for a large pack, easy to use and actually help your dog learn to use the bathroom in a designated area.
- Ammonia is your best friend
When you clean the floor after an accident with just soap and water, your dog can still smell their own pee (even if you can’t). Ammonia eliminates the pee odor, even for a dog’s nose! That way, your dog won’t think the hardwood floor is their pee place.
- Make pee time as frequent as possible
We all have busy lives, but if you can set a timer on your phone to let your pup outside each hour, you will have fewer accidents on your hands and he will learn proper potty etiquette way faster!
- Rewarding paw-sitive behavior is key!
Many dog owners think rubbing their dog’s nose in the doo-doo and scolding them will teach them a lesson. A more effective (and kinder) approach to potty training is to really reward positive behaviors. Each time your dog goes to the bathroom outside, give him tons of love, attention, affection and treats. Just be sure to reward him right after he does his business!
- Walks count, too!
Don’t forget to bring treats each time you take your puppy for a walk. Whenever they pee or poop during a walk, that is the perfect opportunity to reward their good behavior.
