Whether it’s your dog that sheds half of its coat each day or your roommate’s dog, it can quickly get out of hand! Before you know it, your friends will avoid visiting your home for fear of their black pants getting ruined by white dog hair. Don’t worry – there are solutions to keeping a clean house, even with a shedding dog.
- Buy a nice vacuum
The first step is perhaps a bit obvious, but will truly make all the difference in the world. Splurge on a nice vacuum and use it! You’d be shocked at how fast you can suck up all the hair with an upgraded vacuum.
- Comb your dog outside daily
We know how doggie expenses can add up, but investing in a good dog brush will ultimately save you lots of money on new rugs and furniture. Before shopping for a brush, talk to your dog’s groomer about the best brush for their type of fur to get the most bang for your buck! If your dog is still shedding quite a bit, try combing it 2-3 times a day.
- Indoor training for the dog
If your dog or your roommate’s dog is a shedder, you don’t have to sacrifice your couch or bed! You can train the dog to stay on the floor or in its own doggie bed. Click here for tips for training your dog.
- Lint roll, lint roll, lint roll
If you have a roommate, go ahead and buy one for them, too! Vacuuming is great for floors, but hair still remains around the house. Lint rolling the furniture is a great way to make your home look and feel significantly cleaner. Your houseguests will thank you, too!
- Take your dog to the groomer
Depending on your dog’s breed, shaving their fur in the summer can save you from a lot of hair! If you have a dog that can’t be shaved, take them to the groomer more frequently. Dogs tend to shed the most in the summer with temperatures rising. If you keep their fur as short as possible, shedding will be reduced and your dog will be a happier camper!
In addition to these very basic steps you can take to avoid your dog’s shedding, you can also ask your dog’s vet about food and vitamins made specifically for pet shedding. Share your tips and tricks in the comments below!
